What is in it
- Daywork sheet. Contractor, job, client or contract administrator, sheet number, date, who gave the instruction and its reference, a description of the work, then labour (name, trade, date, start, finish, hours, with a total), plant (what, plant number, hours, operator) and materials (what, quantity, unit, delivery ticket, supplier), and signatures for both sides.
- Log. One row for each sheet: number, date, instruction, hours, who signed it for the client and when, sent for valuation, paid.
What makes a daywork sheet stand up
RICS guidance describes daywork records as prepared by the contractor "recording the labour, plant and materials used in the operation", and submitted "to the architect/contract administrator for verification", and says daywork sheets "must be signed off by the contract administrator". In practice that means four things:
- Written on the day, while the work can still be seen and checked.
- Names and hours, not "2 men, all day".
- The instruction it rests on: who asked for the work, when, and the reference.
- Signed by the client's side as soon as possible, and a copy kept by each.
Your contract decides how daywork is instructed, recorded and valued, and by when sheets must be submitted. In the JCT 2024 Standard Building Contract the clause is 5.7, Daywork. Rates and percentage additions for overheads and profit are applied when the work is valued, under the contract.
Questions
Is the template free?
Yes. Download it, change it and share it. There is no sign-up and no email address to give.
Why are there no rates on the sheet?
The sheet records what was used. Rates and percentage additions come from the contract and are applied when the work is valued, so a sheet without prices is easier to get signed on site.
What if the client's representative will not sign?
Send the sheet anyway, the same day, and record when and to whom it went in the Log. Your contract says how disputed daywork is dealt with.
